Safety & Environment
Harsco’s award-winning, company-developed SafeGuard program underscores our commitments to protecting the global environment, natural resources and human health.
Principles & Practices
We apply SafeGuard’s principles and practices throughout every operation of the company. Our basic premise is that all injuries and occupational illnesses are preventable. We insist that our operations strive for an injury free workplace, are never satisfied when injuries occur, and take the required action to prevent them. We closely monitor our safety performance against specific corporate goals as well as comparable general industry standards. Harsco's SafeGuard principles are exemplified in an award-winning video produced by our SGB division. Click here to view the video. Since SafeGuard’s inception, our worldwide safety performance has consistently exceeded the general industry average. Nevertheless, we still have more ground to cover and more successes to achieve. We will not be satisfied until we reach our ultimate goal of Zero Injuries.
Environmental Program
Through our SafeGuard environmental program, we continually assess the environmental impact of our operating facilities and products, and take actions to eliminate unacceptable risks to customers, employees, neighbors, and the communities in which we operate. Our commitment extends beyond expected compliance with environmental laws and includes the incorporation of sound environmental practices into our business decision-making processes.
Our environmental commitment also extends to the work we do. Harsco's services to the global steel industry include the processing of more than 45 million tons of byproduct slag and scrap material per year on behalf of our steelmaking customers. We return valuable metallic content to the mills for reuse in the production of new steel, and we market slag products on our customers' behalf for use as high quality construction materials.
Harsco is also the pioneer in recycling electric utility coal slag into aesthetically pleasing, competitively priced roofing granules as well as low-free-silica blasting abrasives. Through our Reed Minerals division, we convert more than one million tons of coal slag material each year into useful, environmentally-responsible products that would otherwise go to landfill.
